Paris Saint-Germain Defeats Marseille on Penalties to Secure French Super Cup in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now won the season-opening trophy on fourteen separate times.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a stoppage-time leveler followed by a successful penalty shootout to overcome their arch-rivals in the Gulf and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive French Super Cup title.

The European champions seemed to be sailing towards a straightforward win in the showdown between the Ligue 1 champions and the French Cup holders after the French winger found the scoring early on.

However, Marseille fired two times in the closing moments to take a shock lead. Initially, the English forward converted from the penalty spot, before Willian Pacho inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable turn of events, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a vital equaliser in the dying moments to force the match into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then emerged as the hero, saving crucial kicks from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, the midfielder, the full-back, and the young talent all converted with composure for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a 4-1 shootout win.

Now 14-time winners PSG, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now won this trophy for the twelfth time in the past thirteen seasons.
