The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
